Wild Weekend

posted 9 Jun 2015, 05:25 by Elaine Sheridan

The 19th Shamrock O-Ringen provided all participants with three days of epic orienteering in beautiful and challenging terrain on Cobduff and Shrone Hill near Glengarriff and on Derrycluvane on the Sheep's Head peninsula.

One of this year's M16 participants Jamie Latimer has compiled a great video montage of his experience of orienteering in the very mixed weather conditions and the very difficult and testing terrain that encompassed the 2015 Shamrock O-Ringen.

For the organisers it is great to see how things looked from the competitors point of view.....it really was tough going out there.

Thanks Jamie for allowing us to share your excellent footage.

It's Legend!

Final results for the 2015 Shamrock O-Ringen have now been posted on the Results pages.

If anyone else has any they would like to share they can forward them to us at corko@orienteering.ie or share them via our facebook page - www.facebook.com/corkorienteering

We sincerely hope that you enjoyed your weekend in the Glengarriff area and we would welcome any feedback or comments you might have on the event.

What a Difference a Day Makes

posted 1 Jun 2015, 16:27 by Elaine Sheridan

We all know the Irish summer is very variable but I think the images below really sum it up.

The top picture was taken at the assembly area on Day 2 (31/05/2015) and the lower picture is the same area on Day 3 (01/06/2015).....I think we had a lucky escape here!

Day 3 Results

posted 1 Jun 2015, 16:10 by Elaine Sheridan   [ updated 1 Jun 2015, 16:13 ]

It was another difficult day for competitors at Derrycluvane on Day 3 of the 19th Shamrock O-Ringen. The chasing start got under way at 10am on an exposed ridge high above the assembly area.

While the long range visibility was reasonable for the early starters the driving rain and strong winds presented an additional challenge to all participants while navigating around this technical terrain. As the morning progressed the fog descended making conditions even tougher and as the wind speeds increased even the organisers began to struggle and feared their tent would become airborne.

These testing conditions didn't deter all those vying for 2015 Shamrock O-Ringen Championship titles and there was some fierce competition amongst the chasers and within the classes.

Following three consecutive taxing days of orienteering Marcus Pinker (CORKO) was crowned the 2015 M21E Shamrock O-Ringen Champion and Toni O'Donovan (CORKO) was declared the 2015 W21E Shamrock O-Ringen Champion.

Congratulations to our champions and well done to all those who braved the elements and ventured out in those extreme conditions. Day 3 results and split times are available here:

Overall competition results will be published soon.

Day 2 Results and Start Times for Day 3

posted 31 May 2015, 11:32 by Rob McEvoy   [ updated 31 May 2015, 11:59 ]

Well done to all who competed in our long distance event today. The junior courses visited Glengarriff Nature Reserve, where the courses were less technically demanding than yesterday, and there were many happy faces at the Assembly Area. Competitors on courses 1 - 8 raced on Shrone hill, which was both technically and physically demanding. Luckily, the weather was much more pleasant today and the visibility on the hill was good.

Results from today are available here:

Based on the results from Day 1 and Day 2, our start team (pictured above) has produced the following start list for Day 3, which should ensure an exciting Chasing Start event on Derrycluvane.

Start list: Day 3 Start List

Remember to allow 45 minutes if travelling from Glengarriff to Derrycluvane. The parking field is very close to the Start. Please follow the directions of the parking marshals.

Finally, we had an enquiry about non-competitive "entry on the day" tomorrow. Derrycluvane is a technically difficult area. However, if visitors wish to try Course 10 (which will be a taped route), please ask Elaine at the information tent.

Here are some photos taken by the Day 3 Controller (Fachtna Healy) on Derrycluvane today:

See you tomorrow on Shrone Hill / Glengarriff Nature Reserve for a hopefully drier Day 2!
